The definitions of "negro"

Recently, la Red Española de Inmigración y Ayuda al Refugiado (Spanish Network of Immigration and Refugee Aid) requested an urgent modification to the word “Negro” to the highest authority in the Spanish language RAE (Real Academia de la Lengua Española) to avoid the continue use of definitions that cause discrimination to people.

Some of the accepted meanings questioned by the NGO are: ”Person who works anonymously for the benefit or profit of another" (similar to a “ghost writer”) and "unhappy, unfortunate". According to this organization, the issue emerged when some politicians made outrageous uses of this expression to refer to those particular meanings, “since we consider that language is political and a reflection of society, we believe that it can not be supported by RAE.”

Although the Academy expressed interest in reviewing such request, some have shown disagreement with the idea. The Cuban writer Alejandro Armengol believes that “it opens the door for the musical note to be considered racist, where a black note has a duration that is half of a white one, or also for names such as the black novel, the black cinema or the black series. Political correctness turned into linguistic aberration.”
